ParticipantHI Tracy,
From discussions we had with SRCL it is my understanding that wipes with chemical/alcohol etc. and considered to be healthcare risk waste i.e. contaminated with blood/body fluid/infectious matter, have to go into a purple lidded rigid container and can not go into the risk-waste soft waste stream. These waste bags are steam treated and the interaction with the chemicals and the steam are causing health and safety issues in the processing facility.
Wipes considered to be non-risk can safely be disposed of into the non-risk waste bin. Non-risk waste is not steam treated.
It’s very difficult to police and manage locally. We have placed purple lidded bins in specific locations and asked all staff if they have used a large amount of wipes/cloths to clean up a clinical spill to place them into a yellow bag and dispose of it in the yellow rigid container.
Happy to talk to call if you want to discuss

ParticipantHI Lenora,
It is my understanding that parking is free for attendees – I’ll check with Margaruite and confirm.

ParticipantHI Emer,
We’ve been using Biosystems in all departments for years now. We use both 7.5L and 30L bins and have not had any issues.
We still require the smaller 2.5L bins for point of care sharps disposal

ParticipantHi Lauren,
Our method is probably very old fashioned and not technical at all but each in-patient ward has an Excel sheet that they input denominator data into daily.
They record:
No. of patients
No. of CVCs
No. pf PVCs
No. of UCs.
The excel is emailed to IPC at the end of each month. We use this data to calculate our rates.
You are dependent on the CNMs co-operating, it took a little bit of time to get them all filling it out consistently but it’s part of the routine now and we have good participation.
Hope that helps,
Audrey -

ParticipantHi Terry,
Our cleaning contractors use ECat for environmental audits. I’m not familiar with it for hand hygiene audits.
