      Hi Brona
Healthcare risk waste bins should be in situ at the point of care if there is an ongoing need for them for example in an outbreak situation or if there is transmissible infection risk or MDRO.

In the event there is a dressing requirement where there is blood an body fluids present at the time of the dressing change – the used dressing waste could be returned to the healthcare risk waste bin in the sluice as this would be the only time you need the healthcare risk waste bin. In this instance I don’t think the bin needs to be brought to the point of care. The dressing trolley should be returned to the sluice for cleaning after the dressing change. Within the dressing packs there is a waste bag which is self-sealing.

It’s about local risk assessment so as to manage and segregate the waste in line with the IPC risks.

      Hope that helps.
      Kind regards Jacinta
